Llythyr yr Esgob i'r esgobaeth

9 Ionawr 2021

Annwyl gyfeillion

Pob gras a thangnefedd i chi.

Persbectif a dyfalbarhad

Yn fy myfyrdod yr wythnos hon, rwy'n myfyrio am bersbectif a dyfalbarhad.

Mae persbectif a dyfalbarhad yn rhinweddau sydd wrth wraidd yr Efengyl oherwydd eu bod yn llifo o ffyddlondeb: ffydd yn Nuw, a'r ymddiriedaeth nad ein sefyllfa ni yw prif benderfynydd hapusrwydd a bodlonrwydd.

Realiti rhai o Gristnogion mawr y gorffennol yw eu bod, yn wyneb caledi di-ri, wedi medru ffynnu a rhannu tangnefedd Duw. O ble gawn ni'r llyw Beiblaidd ar gyfer hyn? Rwy'n archwilio hyn yn fy myfyrdod.

Un myfyrdod ddwyieithog wedi'i recordio a geir yr wythnos hon. Mae'r testun ar gael yn llawn yn y ddwy iaith, ynghyd â'r deunydd yr wyf yn ei ddarparu i gefnogi addoliad y Sul ar yr aelwyd, gan gynnwys trefn gwasanaeth dwyieithog ar gyfer Litwrgi y Gair a thestun y darlleniadau.

Y Parchedicaf John Davies

Archesgob Cymru

Yn gynharach yr wythnos hon, cyhoeddodd Archesgob Cymru y bydd yn ymddeol maes o law. Mae'r Archesgob John wedi bod yn Esgob Abertawe ac Aberhonddu am y 13 blynedd diwethaf, ac yn Archesgob am y bedair olaf o'r rhain.

Mae'r Archesgob wedi bod yn ddiysgog a chadarn yn y dyddiau anodd hyn, gan ddod â sefydlogrwydd dirfawr ei angen a chan gynnig llais calonogol, oddi mewn i'r Eglwys ac yn y gymuned ehangach.

Gellir gweld y cyhoeddiad am ei ymddeoliad, ynghyd â theyrngedau gan Archesgob Caergaint ac arweinwyr eglwysig eraill, fan hyn.

Gwn y bydd cyfeillion o bob cwr o’r esgobaeth hon yn ymuno â mi yn fy niolch i’r Archesgob am yr arweinyddiaeth y mae wedi’i roi inni, ac mewn anfon dymuniadau gwresog ato am ymddeoliad dedwydd.

Addasiadau'r pandemig

Hoffwn achub ar y cyfle i atgoffa cydweithwyr o gynnwys fy llythyr ychwanegol yn gynharach yr wythnos hon, a ganolbwyniodd ar y pandemig a'n hymateb yn ystod y Lefel Rhybudd uchel cyfredol. Yn hyn a geir ynddo yw'r canllawiau mwyaf diweddar o hyd.

Yn sgil trafodaethau rhwng cydweithwyr taleithiol a Llywodraeth Cymru yr wythnos ddiwethaf hon, bydd ymateb yr Eglwys i’r pandemig (gan gynnwys canllawiau ynghylch addoli cyhoeddus) ar agenda cyfarfod Mainc yr Esgobion yr wythnos hon.

Bydd cyfarfod arbennig o Gorff y Cynrychiolwyr (sy'n rheoli asedau hanesyddol cenedlaethol yr Eglwys yng Nghymru) hefyd yn cael ei gynnal mewn ychydig dros bythefnos, i drafod ein hymateb ariannol taleithiol parhaus i'r pandemig.

Byddaf, wrth gwrs, mewn cysylltiad eto pan fydd gwybodaeth newydd i'w rannu.

Rwy'n ymwybodol o'r gofal, y ddirnadaeth a'r gwaith caled sy'n rhan o weinidogaethu ar yr adeg hon. Hoffwn sicrhau fy nghydweithwyr clerigol o'm diolch a'm gweddïau dros eu gweinidogaeth gydol y dyddiau dyrus hyn.

Cofiwch y gweddïir drosoch bob dydd yn Nhŷ'r Esgob: chi, eich teuluoedd a'ch Ardaloedd Gweinidogaeth. Gras a thangnefedd i chwi oll.

Dad Nefol, datgelaist Iesu'n Fab yn nyfroedd yr Iorddonen: bydded i ni ei gydnabod fel ein Harglwydd a'n hadnabod ein hunain yn blant annwyl i ti; trwy Iesu Grist ein Gwaredwr. Amen.

Y Gwir Barchg Andy John
Esgob Bangor

The Bishop's letter to the diocese

9 January 2021

Dear colleagues and friends

All grace and peace to you.

Perspective and perseverance

In my meditation this week, I explore the ideas of perspective and perseverance.

Perspective and perseverance are virtues that lie at the heart of the Gospel because they flow from a response of faith: faith in God, and faith that our situation is not the primary determinant of happiness or contentment.

The reality of some of the great Christians in times past is that, whatever hardships they faced, they were able to flourish and radiate the peace of God. Where do we find the Biblical steer for this? I explore this in my meditation..

My recorded meditation this week is a single, bilingual meditation. Fully bilingual versions of the texts are available, as is material that I am making available to support Sunday worship at home, including a bilingual order of service for the Liturgy of the Word and the text of the readings.

The Most Revd John Davies

The Archbishop of Wales

The Archbishop of Wales announced his forthcoming retirement earlier this week. Archbishop John has been Bishop of Swansea & Brecon for the past 13 years, and Archbishop for the last four of these.

The Archbishop has been steadfast and resolute in these most difficult of times, bringing much needed stability and offering a reassuring voice, both to those in the Church and to those in the wider community.

The announcement of his retirement, along with tributes from the Archbishop of Canterbury and other church leaders, can be found here.

I know that colleagues from across this diocese will join me in thanking the Archbishop for the oversight he has given us, and in sending him our very best wishes for a long and happy retirement.

Pandemic adaptations

May I remind colleagues of the content of my additional letter earlier this week, focusing on the pandemic and our response during the current high Alert Level. The information contained therein continues to be the most up-to-date guidance.

In the wake of discussions between provincial colleagues and the Welsh Government this past week, the Church’s response to the pandemic, include guidance about public worship, will be in the agenda of the meeting of the Bench of Bishops this coming week.

A specially-convened meeting of the Representative Body (which manages the national historic assets of the Church in Wales) will also be taking place in a little over a fortnight, to discuss our ongoing provincial financial response to the pandemic.

I will, of course, be in touch again when there is new information to be shared.

I am conscious of the care, wisdom and hard work that is demanded of my clerical colleagues at this time. Please be assured of my thanks and of my prayers for your ministry at this difficult time.

Noticeboard

  • The diocesan Plygain service will take place on Zoom this year, on Friday 15 January at 7pm. If you would like to take part by submitting a video of a carol, please contact Robert Townsend as soon as possible. If you would like to be part of the Zoom congregation, please also contact Canon Townsend for the link.
  • Richard Wood, the Ministry Area Leader of Bro Madryn, has offered his services as a facilitator for running an online Alpha Course on behalf of any Ministry Area across the diocese. If you would be interested in working with Richard to deliver an Alpha Course in your Ministry Area, please contact Richard by email.
  • The Archdeacon of Bangor led the Sunday morning Celebration service on Radio Wales last Sunday, celebrating the Epiphany. The broadcast can be heard here.
  • The Revd Lloyd Jones’s obituary appeared in this week’s Church Times, and can be read here. In it, Archdeacon Mary writes movingly and appropriately: “There was a gentle shyness about Lloyd, even alongside his side-splitting humour and his skill as a storyteller; I think he would want us to remember his story as one that points to the greater story of Christ.”

Please remember you are prayed for each day in Ty’r Esgob: you, your families and Ministry Areas. Grace and peace to you all.

Heavenly Father, at the Jordan you revealed Jesus as your Son: may we recognize him as our Lord and know ourselves to be your beloved children; through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

The Rt Revd Andy John
Bishop of Bangor
