Andy John

Cafodd yr Archesgob Andy ei fagu yn Aberystwyth. Aeth i Ysgol Penglais a graddiodd yn y Gyfraith ym Mhrifysgol Cymru, Caerdydd, yn 1986 ac mewn Diwinyddiaeth ym Mhrifysgol Nottingham yn 1988. Fe wnaeth hefyd ennill Diploma mewn Astudiaethau Bugeiliol yn 1989 yng Ngholeg Sant Ioan, Nottingham.

Cafodd ei ordeinio’n ddiacon yn 1989 ac yn offeiriad yn Esgobaeth Tyddewi yn 1990 a bu’n gwasanaethu ei holl weinidogaeth ordeiniedig yn yr esgobaeth honno tan iddo gael ei ethol yn Esgob Bangor. Bu’n gurad yn Aberteifi, y Ferwig a Mwnt o 1989 a 1991 a hefyd yn Aberystwyth rhwng 1991-1992. Gwasanaethodd wedyn fel ficer ym Mywoliaeth Reithorol Aberystwyth rhwng 1992 a 1999. Penodwyd Andy i blwyf Henfynyw gydag Aberaeron a Llanddewi Aberarth yn 1999 – plwyf a ehangodd yn 2005 i gynnwys Llanbadarn Trefeglwys.

Cafodd ei benodi’n ficer Pencarreg gyda Chwmann a Llanycrwys ac yn Archddiacon Aberteifi yn 2006. Fe’i etholwyd yn Esgob Bangor yn 2008.

Fel offeiriad plwyf, bu’r Archesgob Andy yn cadeirio Pwyllgor Ieuenctid yr Esgobaeth a gwasanaethodd ar nifer fawr o gyrff eglwysig yr Esgobaeth yn cynnwys Corff Llywodraethol yr Eglwys yng Nghymru. Bu hefyd yn Genhadwr Archesgob Caergaint ar Grŵp Degawd Efengyliaeth Springboard. Bu’n ddirprwy ac wedyn yn Gadeirydd Llywodraethwyr Ysgol Gynradd Plascrug ac yn Gadeirydd Cyswllt Ceredigion (asiantaeth stryd adsefydlu cyffuriau sy’n defnyddio model triniaeth Minnesota) am ddegawd. Fel Esgob Bangor, mae wedi parhau i gynghori asiantaethau lleol ar faterion yn ymwneud â chyffuriau ac alcohol.

Fel Archddiacon Aberteifi ysgrifennodd gwrs efengyliaeth ‘Menter’ a chyd-gynhyrchu’r DVD ategol dan yr un teitl.

Fel Esgob Bangor, mae gan Andy gyfrifoldebau portffolio am efengyliaeth, twf yr eglwys, y Gymraeg (mae’n siarad Cymraeg) a stiwardiaeth. Gwasanaethodd ar Gyngor Padarn Sant tan fis Mehefin 2017.

Mae’r Archesgob Andy yn mwynhau rhedeg, cadw’n gymharol heini, canu’r sacsoffon a’r gitâr. Mae’n briod â Naomi ac mae ganddo bedwar o blant sydd bellach yn oedolion o’i briodas gyntaf.

Mae meysydd diddordebau ymchwil yr Archesgob yn cynnwys astudiaethau beiblaidd a’r berthynas rhwng y celfyddydau gweledol ac ysbrydolrwydd, ac mae’n cyfrannu’n gyson i gyfres BRF, New Daylight. Mae’n mwynhau chwaraeon, celfyddyd a cherddoriaeth, sy’n amrywio o Arvo Pärt i Led Zeppelin.

Andy John

Archbishop Andy grew up in Aberystwyth. He went to Ysgol Penglais and graduated in Law at the University of Wales, Cardiff, in 1986 and in Theology at the University of Nottingham in 1988. He also gained a Diploma in Pastoral Studies in 1989 at St John’s College, Nottingham. He was ordained as a deacon in 1989 and as priest in the Diocese of St Davids in 1990 and served all his ordained ministry until his election as Bishop of Bangor within that Diocese. He was a curate in Cardigan, Y Ferwg and Mwnt from 1989 to 1991 and also in Aberystwyth from 1991-1992. He then served as vicar in the Rectorial Benefice of Aberystwyth from 1992 to 1999. Andy was appointed to the parish of Henfynyw with Aberaeron and Llanddewi Aberarth in 1999 – a parish which expanded in 2005 to include Llanbadarn Trefeglwys.

He was appointed vicar of Pencarreg with Cwman and Llanycrwys and Archdeacon of Cardigan in 2006. He was elected Bishop of Bangor in 2008.

As a parish priest Archbishop Andy chaired the Diocesan Youth Committee and served on numerous Diocesan church bodies including the Governing Body of the Church in Wales. He was also an Archbishop of Canterbury Missioner on the Springboard Decade of Evangelism Group. He was deputy and then Chair of Governors in Plascrug Primary School and Chair of Cyswllt Ceredigion (a drugs rehabilitation street agency working the Minnesota model of treatment) for a decade. As Bishop of Bangor he has continued to advise local agencies on drug and alcohol related issues

As Archdeacon of Cardigan he wrote the Evangelism Course ‘Menter’ and jointly produced the accompanying DVD under the same title.

As Bishop of Bangor, Andy holds the portfolio responsibilities for evangelism, church growth, the Welsh language (he speaks Welsh) and stewardship. He served on the St Padarn’s Council until June 2017.

Archbishop Andy enjoys running, staying reasonably fit, playing the saxophone and the guitar. He is married to Naomi and has four grown-up children from his first marriage.

The Archbishop’s research interests include biblical studies and the interplay between the visual arts and spirituality, and he is a regular contributor to BRF’s New Daylight series. He enjoys sport, art and music which varies from Arvo Pärt to Led Zeppelin.
